Providing care for the mentally handicapped children
T he Tumelo Home opened its doors in April 1998. Currently, twenty children reside there, as well as providing daycare for the ten of the children. All residents and day visitors are intellectually disabled and there are many with physical disabilities. The Home’s name means faith. Dr. Moses and Mrs. Orina Thindisa were compelled by love and compassion to build the home in Ivory Park, an informal settlement in Midrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng. Three years later, the home was officially opened by the then MEC of Social Development and Welfare, Angie Motshega.

The organization is a beneficiary of companies like 3M, Radio Pulpit, Sky Chef LSG, SAB, Doctors for Life International and many local churches. The organization has so far received grants, which amount to five hundred thousand dollars for building the Home.

The Home is known for its enthusiasm, progressive ideas, and high integrity for quality physical and mental care. The children are not simply housed and fed, but are taught and encouraged to reach their maximum growth potential. As a result, eight of our children have moved on and are attending different special schools in Natalspruit, Ekurthuleni, Gauteng.

The ages of the children at the Home range from three to 33-years old. The staff’s areas of expertise include nursery care, pre-school education, and education for the intellectually disabled. The Home is a place filled with love and laughter. The children are provided with 24-hour monitoring and care.

The Home has a daycare center that provides education and supervision for the children of low-income families and the peace of mind to and freedom to enable them to work during the day. The children attending daycare benefit from the same advantages as the full-time residents. There is a stimulation/education area, which is integral to the stimulation and development of the children’s sensory and motor skills. A number of educational programs are included, based on a preschool curriculum. Residents of all ages participate in these groups. Based on the each child’s individual needs, specific progress and developmental goals are set which the children are taught and encouraged to reach their personal maximum potential. Cultural and Christian programs are well as a full range of therapies are also offered.

Approximately 30% of the residents are orphaned, abandoned or from indigent backgrounds and are infected with HIV/AIDSA. The additional medical needs of these children places a significant financial strain to the budget and bottom line costs to operate the Home.

There are a large number of children on the waiting list for the Tumelo Home. If enough funds were raised to complete the second phase of the building, including a larger stimulation room, the Tumelo Home would be able to provide benefits and services to other worthy families in their community. It is only with the generous support from the donations of others that the Tumelo Home can continue to run and provide these orphaned, abandoned and indigent children suffering with intellectual and developmental disabilities to receive the quality care they so deserve.
