I first learnt of Tumelo Home and the great work that was being done there through Ms. Ann Maynard who became involved in raising funds to build a proper home for the children. Ann Maynard first became involved with the Thindisa family after hearing Dr. Thindisa preach at her church, the Presbyterian Church in Kempton Park. She was so touched by the work he was doing and in very difficult circumstances that she and her brother felt called upon to help fund raise for a clinic and community centre.
They were very successful and the clinic and community centre were officially opened in July 199. Ann received the Star of Africa from Nelson Mandela for the dedicating her life to the upliftment of the people of Ivory Park at the age of 91.

I visited the original home in 1999 with Ann and was so touched by the love and care being shown to the children under almost impossible circumstances, there was no running water or electricity and yet all the children were well fed and beautifully clean. The ladies caring for the children were cheerful and loving under the supervision of Mrs. Orina Thindisa. I was so impressed with Mrs. Thindisa and the care giver's dedication and selfless giving that I decided to become involved in the fund rising for a proper home to house the children. Whilst I was there, Dr. Moses (Thindisa) popped in to greet us and it was wonderful to see all the children vying for his attention! He was obviously very loved by these little souls.

I have continued over the years to fund raise and to visit the home as often as I can. I continue to find the same dedication and love as on that very first visit. Tumelo Home truly lives up to the meaning of its name, faith. It is through faith that the home continues to run and grow. Tumelo Home has a very special place in my heart and over the years the people who I have taken to visit have all been touched and humbled by the love and dedication found there.

On our most recent visit to take the photographs, Ann accompanied me, she is now 100 years old and as you will see in the photos, is still capable of playing ball with the children and showing them love and affection.
